Chalet Hay
Chalet Hay is located in the small quiet village of Gripp on the route from Bagneres-de-Bigorre to the La Mongie mountain resort and ski station in the Tourmalet ski area. Gripp is the last traditional village before reaching La Mongie which makes it ideal for the quick drive up the mountain for keen skiers, all-season mountain sports enthusiasts and those just wanting to appreciate time in the Mountains. Thus its a perfect place to holiday in the Pyrenees.
Chalet Hay was originally built in the mid 1600s and until 30 years ago its main use was a Bergerie or sheep shed!
The Bergerie was converted into its current use as a holiday home in 1978. We fell in love with the Bergerie in February 2007 and enjoyed further modernising it. Original features from the buildings former use are still very present, for example the original beams, the various rocks poking through the walls and the ladder which separates the dining area from the bar area. When the previous owners converted the Bergerie they also found paintings by shepherds on the walls upstairs, copies of which we are hoping to obtain.
The livestock were housed downstairs and the shepherds slept in the hayloft at the upper back half of the grange. The trough the sheep used to drink out of has been retained in the building and is located by the lounge door. This currently serves as a great place to keep wine cool!
